history John de Menil, art collector and patron, philanthropist, oil executive and Chairman of the Board of Schlumberter, Ltd. Menil was born in Paris, France, the son of Georges Menu and Madeleine (Rougier) de Menil, he married the former Dominique Schlumberger in 1931 and settled in Houston in 1941.

Menil was a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Primitive Art, the Institute of Religion in Houston, the Rhode Island Institute of Design, and vice president of the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art.
