Jacques Gelman was an art collector, European and Mexincan film producer and distributor. He and his wife, nee Natasha Zahalka (Moravia, now Czech Republic), collected 20th century European and Mexican paintings. The Gelman collection included work by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, José Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo, Gunther Gerszo, Maria Izquierdo, Leonora Carrington, Carlos Merida, Carlos Orozco Romero, Juan Soriano, Agustin Lazo, Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Bonnard, Derain, Miro, Dali, Tanguy, Balthus and others. Natasha bequeathed some work from their collection to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The remaining works from the Gelman Estate are overseen by the Vergel Foundation (New York and Mexico City). |
