history Marguerite "Peggy" Guggenheim was an art collector, patron, dealer, gallery owner and museum founder. An industrialist and banking heiress Guggenheim was the daughter of Benjamin Guggenheim and Florette Seligman (her father died on the SS Titanic in 1912).

In 1938, Guggenheim opened her London gallery in London Guggenheim Jeune (closed 1937) and in 1942 she opened her New York City Gallery The Art of This Century Gallery (closed in 1947).

Guggenheim both championed and owed work by, among others, Jean Cocteau, Wassily Kandinsky, Yves Tanguy, Wolfgang Paalen, Antoine Pevsner, Henry Moore, Henri Laurens, Alexander Calder, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Constantin Brâncu i, Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, George Braque, Kurt Schwitters, When finished, she had acquired ten Picassos, Jaun Miró, René Magritte, Man Ray, Salvador Dalí, Paul Klee, Marc Chagall, Jackson Pollock, William Congdon, Ada Verdun Howell, Robert Motherwell, and Max Ernst.
Guggenheim donated her home and collection to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1976.

Guggenheim was married twice; first, to Laurence Vail, in Paris in 1922 (left in 1928 for the English intellectual John Holms) and secondly, to the artist Max Ernst who she divorced in 1943.
