John Hay was an art collector, statesman, diplomat, historian, author, journalist, and poet. Hay's collection primarily consisted of work by old masters, including Giovanni Battista Salvi's (1605-1665), "Madonna and Child," a painting from the fifteenth century Florentine School "Madonna in Adoration," and a fifteen century Flemish school painting, "Christ on the Cross, with Mary and John" (Noteworthy paintings in American private collections.
