Art collector and engineer. He collected early-20th-century American and European paintings, with an emphasis on the School of Paris. Howald's collection included work by Marin, Dove, Demuth, Prendergast, Glackens, Hartley, Charles Sheeler, Preston Dickinson, Blume, Pascin, Rousseau, Degas, Derain, Gleize, Rivera, Villon, Gris, Picasso, Leger, Braque. In addition to leaving a purchase fund, and contributing a fifth of new building costs, the bulk of the Howald Collection was given to Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts. |
