Philanthropist and art collector of French art with an emphasis on Impressionism. She was the widow of Philip J. Levin, a lawyer and real estate developer, took over her husband's business after his death in 1971. She was also president of the Philip and Janice Levin Foundation. Levin was an Honorary Trustee of The Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1993 until her death in 2001. The Levin collection included work by impressionists Bonnard, Cassatt, Corot, Derain, Giacometti, Monet, Modigliani, Morisot, Picasso, Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec and Vuillard. Among the gems of the collection were Monet's celebrations of nature ''Artist's Garden at Argenteuil'' from 1873 and his ''On the Cliff at Pourville, Clear Weather''; Degas's acutely observed ''À la Bourse (Portraits in the Stock Exchange)''; and Derain's ''Plate of Peaches.'' |
