history |
Art collector, financier and philanthropist. Financier Sam A. Lewisohn (1884-1951) was the son of Adolph Lewisohn (c. 1849-1938) and Emma Cahn Lewisohn. Adolph Lewisohn was an important industrialist with interests in mining and banking, and was an avid art collector and patron. Sam Lewisohn followed in his father's business and philanthropic interests. He attended Princeton University and Columbia Law School and served as a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. In 1918 Sam married Margaret Seligman, the daughter of Isaac and Greta Loeb Seligman of New York, with whom he had four daughters. Margaret Lewisohn's particular interest was education. In 1922 she had joined the Public Education Association and in 1941 was hired as its Director. He bequeathed his collection to the Princeton University, City College, Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the National Gallery. Lewisohn's collection included work by Gauguin, Renoir, Rousseau, Rouault, Picasso, Seurat, Shahn, Cézanne, Maurice Stern, Van Gogh, and Albert Pinkham Ryder. |
