history John T. Martin was an art collector, philanthropist, and businessman, investor in banks, railroads, real estate, trust companies, and founder of the Polytechnic Institute. Martin was the director of the Polytechnic Institute, Brooklyn Trust, Long Island Trust, Title Guarantee and Trust, and the Home Life Insurance Companies.

He was a member of the Brooklyn Historical society and Society of Old Brooklynites. The John T. Martin art collection was sold April 15-16, 1909, by American Art Galleries, New York.
