| Buyer Notes | The buyer, Charles de Latfeur, born in Bergen (Mons) in Hengou (Hainaut), was the son of Jean de Latfeur, from Antwerp, and of Catharina Sohier. He was born about 1572 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). He was the brother of Pieter de Latfeur of R 20047 and of Susanna Latfeur who married Louis de Malapert, born in Mons, on 24 August 1599. Charles de Latfeur and co. had an account of 12 folio's at the Wisselbank. He was a merchant who, in 1627, accepted a certain quantity of cannon shot in exchange for money lent out to (Philippo) Burlomachi (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 88). He was associated with his brothers-in-law Philippo Calandrini and Andries van der Meulen II in recruiting troops and hiring ships for Venice (Van Dillen, Van rijkdom en regenten, 1970, p. 322. Between 1617 and 1625, Charles de Latfeur (mistakenly transcribed as Latseur in Winkelman) freighted 13 ships (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 186(1983), p. 778). Charles de Latfeur married Hester van der Meulen (1587-1643), born in Bremen, in 1608. On 27 September 1616, Charles Jansson Latfeur and Hester van der Meulen passed their testament (NA 613, film 332). On 29 October 1617, the couple had their child Charles baptized in the Walse Kerck. The witnesses were Andries van der Meulen (Hester's brother), Samuel Becquer representing Philip Calandrien (Calandrini), Jacques van Schot, and Mary de Latfeur (DTB 130/55). Mary Sohier, sister of Catharina Sohier, cited above, was married to Everard Becker, an important merchant in Middelburg and one of the directors of the Middelburg Kamer of the V.O.C. (Van Dillen, op.cit. sup., p. 84). Samuel Becquer of R 20466, a buyer at the present sale, was the son of Everard Becker and of Mary Sohier. Jacques van (or de) Schot was the son of Cornelis de Schot, the brother of Francoys de Schot of R 23342. The wife of Francoys de Schot(I), named Isabeau Walraven, was the daughter of Isabeau Becker, who was presumably related to Everard and Samuel Becker, mentioned above. A daughter of Charles de Latfeur and of Hester van der Meulen, named Catharina, married Nicolaes Ruts II (1601-1642) on 19 January 1638; he was the son of Nicolaes Ruts I, who was painted by Rembrandt in 1631). On 24 November 1637, Nicolaes Ruts de jonge (II), living in Marseilles, presently in Amsterdam, declared at the request of Anneken Jeuriaens van Quickenburg that he had had a child with her (NA 14828, Not. C. Touw). Charles de Latfeur was a signatory of the Remonstrant petition of 1628. In that same year, he was a regent of the Aalmoezeniersweeshuis (Wagenaar, Amsterdam, vol. 2, p. 300.) On 11 October 1635, Carlo Latfeur and Philippo Calandrini, representing Andries van der Meulen, gave a procuration to Gysbert Gerritsz. Majoor in Naerden to collect money due to them (NA 948, film 1171, Not. Benedict Baddel). Charles de Latfeur became a citizen of Amsterdam on 17 November 1638 and died in 1650 (Gelderblom, op. cit.)
