Buyer FamilyPont, Pierre le (du)
Buyer NotesThe buyer may be identical with Pierre du Pont I, from Doornik, who became a poorter of Amsterdam in 1586 or his son Pierre du Pont II,born about 1593 (Gelderblom, Prosopographic Data Base). It was probably his father, koopman in Amsterdam, who sold linseed in 1616 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 164.). In 1618, Pierre du Pont I was a director of the old compagnie for woolen cloth. His account at the Wisselbank numbered 3 folios in 1611 and 1612 and 5 folios in 1615. Pierre du Pont I invested 18,000 f in V.O.C. shares in 1602 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 183-4). On 10 October 1614, Pierre du Pont I and his wife Marie Cologne, assisted their daughter Rebecca upon her betrothal to Thomas Maurois (or Morois) (of R 21918), of Canterbury, the pastor of the French church in Amsterdam, living for the last 18 months on the Oost-Indiese Kay. She was 28 years old (DTB 418/213). Maurois was also a buyer at Orphan Chamber auction (R 21918). In 1625, Pierre de Pont I (?) built (or had himself built) a house on the Keisersgracht (no. 259) (E. van Houten, Grachten, p. 45). Either Pierre du Pont I or II may be identical with Pieter Pont, living on the hoeck van de Wal, who paid a tax of 50 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 121vo, p. 29). Pierre du Pont (I ?) was either the nephew or the cousin of the painter Jacques de Ville (Oud Holland, vol. 7 (1899), p.87).
