BuyerBento Osorio tegen over de Suyderkerck
Buyer FamilyOsorio, Bento
Buyer NotesBento (Baruch) Osorio was a Portuguese-Jewish merchant, who represented the firm of Andreas Lopes Pinto, established in Portugal, in Holland. He was contradoor for the provisioning of Portuguese troops in North Africa and, more generally, active in trade with Portugal (Geschiedenis van de Juden in Nederland, J.C. H. Bloom et al. eds, Amsterdam, 1995, p. 90). On 22 November 1618, a shipper of rice to Dantzig (in a ship apparently freighted by Osorio) was subject to an interrogatoire at Osorio's request (NA 200, film 111). He was taxed 250 f. in 1631, corresponding to an assessed wealth of f. 50,000. This was the highest tax paid by any Jew in Amsterdam (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. XLII.) On the tax itself, see Kohier, fol. 155vo, p. 36). Like many other Jews, he lived on the Breestraet. On 19 March 1626, Francisco Ramiris Pina Tomaer, Portuguese, 30 years old, no living parents, was betrothed to Abigael Osorie, 22. assisted by her father Bento Osorius and her mother Hester Osorie. She seems to have been illiterate (DTB 670/134). Bento Osorio freighted 12 ships between 1608 and 1616 and 17 ships between 1617 and 1625 (chiefly to Portugal) (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Oostzeehandel R.G.P., 185(1983), p. 630, and vol. 186, p. 779.)
