| Buyer Notes | The painter Adriaen van Nieulandt (II) was the son of Adriaen van Nieulandt de oude (I), a dealer in writing pens, and of Gertruyd Loyson, who invested 300 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 180; Van Dillen believed mistakenly that the investment was made by the painter who was only 15 years old at the time.) Adriaen van Nieulandt de jonge was the brother of the painters Jacob van Nieulandt (of R 27331) and Willem (or Guilliam) van Nieulandt (II), who was born about 1584 (see the NOTES to R 31208). On 19 May 1609, Adriaen van Nieuweland, painter, from Antwerp, 22 years old, living in the Pijlsteegh, assisted by his mother Truyken Loyson (also spelled Loijsen), was betrothed to Catelynken Raes Thomasdr., 18, assisted by her father Thomas Raes and her mother Beyken Schepers (in de Kerck) (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p.234.) Between 1611 and 1625, Adriaen van Nieuland and his wife Catryna Raes had 8 children baptized, first in the O.K. (in 1611, 1613) and later in the N.K. These were: Thomas (witnesses Tomas Raes, Gerrit Tybout, and Truiken Loyties grandmother) on 10 July 1611 (Gerrit Tybout was probably the famous fencing master Gerard Thybaut); Abigael (witnesses Robbertij Baudoes of R 28053, Beyken Scheppers, and Janneken Jansdr.) on 14 April 1613; Adriaen (witnesses Katalyne Ras, Daniel van Geel II, probably of R 31393, Carel Hellemans, and Anna Raes) on 11 December 1614; Berber I (witness Isaack van Conincxloo of R 19464) on 12 June 1618; Salomon I (witness Margrieta Bartolotti) on 30 June 1620; Berber (Barbara) of INVNO 1178 (witnesses Jacob Jansz. Hert and Anne Hustert) on 29 March 1622; Catryna (witness Bernert van Someren of R 20424) on 16 January 1624; Salomon II (witnesses Hendrik Verstegen, Fransoys Kersgieter of R 23624, Anna Hoymans, Paulis van Hillegaert of R 20158) on 18 September 1625 (Oud Holland, loc. cit.); Geertruit (witnesses Isaack Phiman and Beyke Scheepers) on 8 August 1630 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p.168n). Hendrick Versteegen was the clockmaker of R 29445 cited below. Margrieta Bartolotti was probably the first wife of Johannes de Renialme of R 8201. It is worth noting that Carel Hellemans and Daniel van Geel (II) (of R 31393), who were witnesses to the baptisms of Adriaen van Nieulandt's children, both signed the album amicorum of Gerard Thibault, as did Adriaen van Nieulandt himself (De la Fontaine Verwey, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 69(1977). All three may have been pupils of the fencing master. On 15 November 1617, Carlo van Heldewier and Isaack Coijmans (of R 28346, also a signer of Thibaut's Album Amicorum), together with Adriaen Nieulandt, schilder, declared at the request of Daniel van Gele (Daniel van Geel II) (cited above) that, in September of the same year, they had been present in the house of Jacques van Hanswyck (II) when Daniel had bought two paintings from the Antwerp dealer Anthony Goetkint, both painted on copper, originals by Hendrick Steenwijck, now in London. Both were churches in perspective (i.e. interiors), one by day and the other by night (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 166n of Nachträge). On 17 June 1619, Van Nieulandt bought from Mr. Cornelis Sasbout (of R 20992) a lot 30 feet broad on the Heeregracht, south of the house of Aert de Coninck, the jeweler of INVNO 161. On 16 April 1639, he sold this house in the Pijlsteech to his brother-in-law Hendrick Versteegen (of R 29445), the husband of Anna Raes. He had inherited part of the house from Thomas Raes and Baeyken Schepers (Dozy in Obreen, Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis vol.6, pp.48-9). In 1631, Adriaen, who frequently bought and sold houses, was cited as a broker (mackelaer) (Bredius, op. cit., p. 179). On 10 May 1638, a deposition was made at the request of Adriaen van Nieulandt, broker, in which the witness declared that Adriaen van Nieulandt de jonge (III or IV), 17, had been on a ship and lent the Captain and the commissary each 25 f. (NA 696A, film 4982). The young man was Adriaen van Nieulandt's son, probably a second Adriaen (since the first, baptized in 1614, would have been 24 years old by 1638). On 2 July 1652, a marriage contract was signed, on the one hand, by Jan Hendrixsz. Koningh (Coninck), widower of Annetje Jans Pars, and, on the other, by Geertruyt van Nieuland (baptized in 1630). The witnesses were Adriaen van Nieuland, Geertruyt's father; Salomon van Nieuland, notary, her brother; Salomon Coningh (the painter); and Jacob Wayer (Weyer), her brothers-in-law (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p.168n). Adriaen van Nieulandt II died in July 1658. On 5 September 1658, Cors Jansz. Buyck, married to Abigael van Nieulant (widow of Salomon Coningh); Jacob Wayer (of INVNO 1178), married to Barbara van Nieulant; Jan Hendrickse Coninck, married to Geertruyt van Nieulant; Maria Boortens, mother and guardian of her minor children procreated by Salomon Nieulant, declared that Adriaen van Nieulant had died a few weeks ago and that his estate was burdened with debts. They requested from the High Court in The Hague that the accounting of the estate be done under benefit of inventory, which was granted to them (ibid.) | |
