Buyer Notes | On 30 January 1626, Remont de Smith witnessed the baptism of Elisabeth, daughter of Jerosme Victorij and Jacqueline Hiolle. The other witnesses were Jan Dablin of INVNO 491 and Margerite Hiole (DTB 130/202). Jerosme (or Jeronimus) Victorij was an important tulip grower. Jacqueline Hiolle was the daughter of Jacqueline de Cocq (of INVNO 249) and of Esaias Hiolle and the sister of Isaack Hiolle of R 23398, as well presumably as of Margerite Hiole. The latter was married to Caspar van de Venne, who may have been the brother of Saer van de Venne, who was married to Isaack Hiol(l)e (NA 695A, film 4981, 3 April 1639). Reijmont de Smith, was taxed 125 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the West side of the Heeregracht (Kohier, fol. 293v, p. 67). On 21 September 1634, Johannes van der Rosieren (cited in R 30000), 52, Anthony Ariaensz. Coninck (cited in R 121 of Montias1), 48, Jeremias Coesaert, spices merchant (cited in R 33388), 41, and Reymont de Smit, merchant 36, declared at the request of the honorable Guilliam van de Helst and Daniel Martens (both cited in R 28860) that a letter they had been shown was authentic (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 21 March 1635, Francoijs Heldewier from Amsterdam declared that some time ago he had come from Brussels with no means of his own. He went with his wife and sister to Reymont de Smit, a relative (familielid), who lent him 1800 f. to start a tulip bulb business on his (Smit's) account. They were given clothing and lodging which would be paid for from the proceeds of the business (NA 670, pak 33, Not. J. Warnaertsz., Extracten, with thanks to Anne Goldgar). According to a document of 14 December 1644 (GAA, NA 689, not. Jan Warnaertsz.), Francois Heldewier, living in the house Clara of Reijmont de Smit, merchant in Amsterdam, declared that he owed Smit, pursuant to an act of 21 March 1635, 1800 f. and also another 4455 f. en 10 st. for tulip bulbs that Smit had bought and transferred to him, Heldewier. De Smit maintained all rights to the bulbs and eventual offsets (klisters) (NA 679, fol. 1644, Not. Jan Warnaertsz., Extracten, also supplied by Anne Goldgar). In 1670, Reymont de Smith was cited as a guardian of the children of Joan Wolters and Sara de Geer (daughter of Louis de Geer) in the INTRO of INVNO 179. Joan Wolters (1611-1669) and Sara de Geer were the parents of Louis Wolters, who married Susanna Maria Walens, the daughter of Nicolaes Walens (on whom see the NOTES to R 20599) and of Susanna Latfeur. Walens remarried with Barbara Wolters Stevensdr., widow of Raymond de Smeth Joostensz., on 4 May 1666. After the death of Susanna Maria Walens, Louis Wolters remarried with Cornelia Quina, born 1652, the daughter of Jacob Quina, verfkoper, and of Adriana Quina, on 12 July 1681 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 517). This Jacob Quina was probably the second of this name (1621-1680) (see the NOTES to R 30652). A portrait of Jacob Quina (1621-1680) and Adriana Quina (?) by Ferdinand Bol dated 1655 has been preserved in the Van de Poll-Wolters-Quina Stichting in Hattum (Prijst de lijst, Exh.Cat., Rijksmuseum, 1984, pp.12-3 (ill.)). From the arguments adduced by Van Thiel it is doubtful whether Adriana Quina was the daughter of Carel Quina II baptized under this name in 1624 (she would clearly have been younger than the woman portrayed by Bol). | |
