| Buyer Family | Keyser, Thomas (Hendricksz.) de | | Buyer Notes | This marks the first appearance at an Orphan Chamber auction of the painter Thomas de Keyser (1596/1597-1667). He was the son of the famous sculptor and architect Hendrick Cornelisz. de Keyser (Utrecht 1565-Amsterdam 19 April 1621), who migrated from Utrecht to Amsterdam in 1591, and of Barbara (Bayken) van Wildere, born in Antwerp. He was the brother of Pieter Hendricksz. de Keyser (1595-1676), also architect, of Willem de Keyser, sculptor, who was named city mason in 1647, went bankrupt in 1658, and went to live in England, and of Hendrick Hendricksz. de Keyser, sculptor, likewise active in England (Ann Adams, The Paintings of Thomas de Keyser ..., Ph.D. dissertation, pp.480-2). Thomas de Keyser, in addition to his activities as a painter, had a business dealing in Portland (blaeuw) stone. He signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. married Machtelt Andries, the daughter of Andries Fredericksz., goldsmith, on 5 June 1626 (DTB 431/239). Andries Fredericksz., goldsmith, invested 900 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1602 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 139). Andries's widow, Martgen Bruinen, signed the Remonstrant petition in 1628. On 5 November 1634, Thomas de Keyser and Machtelt Andries had their son Heyndrick baptized in the Remonstrant Church (DTB 301). Machtelt Andries probably died toward the beginning of 1640. On 3 March 1635, the honorable Thomas de Keyser bought a house on the Kalverstraet (NA 910, Not. Pieter Eyloff). On 21 April 1637, a witness declared at the request of Thomas de Keyser that the gates of the Regulierspoort were still open at 8 P.M. (NA 1276, Not. P. Barcman). On 21 August 1640, Thomas de Keyser, dealer in blue stone, appeared before the Orphan Chamber and declared that his son Heyndrick, 6 years old, whose mother was Machtelt Andries, was entitled to 4,000 f. from the inheritance of the late Grietgen Fredericks, his grandmother (WK 573/789 and Oud Holland 34(1916), p. 65). On 25 August 1640 De Keyser signed the pre-nuptial contract for his impending marriage with Aeltje Heymericks who declared that she had no means of her own. She may have been his maid. Their son Cornelis was baptized in the Remonstrant Church on 15 November 1640 (DTB 301). Barbara (1642), Machtelt (1643), Pieter (1646), Judith (1648), Thomas (1649), and Dyrck followed (Adams, op.cit. pp.483-4). On 25 April 1662, Thomas de Keyser was named city sculptor (stede steenhower) by the city of Amsterdam. He was buried on 7 June 1667, Aeltje Heymericks, on 27 April 1691 (ibid., p.484). Thomas Hendricksz. de Keyser's brother Pieter Hendricksz. (baptized in 1595) married 1) Magdalena Geens and 2) Magdalena Jacobs Indischeraven on 8 August 1625. Magdalena Jacobs was the daughter of Pieter Jacobsz. I (Indischeraven) (c.1550-1629) (of R 31491); she was also the sister of Clara Jacobs Indischeraven who married Thomas's cousin Dirck Aertsz. de Keyser (Adams, op. cit. p. 482). |
