BuyerFrans Koerten kaertafsetter op de Roosegracht
Buyer FamilyKoerten (Coerten), Frans
Buyer NotesThe buyer was a painter and engraver, born in Hamburg, about 1603. He was betrothed to Lysbeth Claes, 21 years old, on 3 February 1624. On this occasion he was assisted by his mother Griete Frans (DTB 429/15). He was living on the Egelantiersstraet and called caertafzetter (map illuminator) when he was again betrothed, this time to Annetje Blijcourt from Cologne, 45, assisted by her mother Hester de Blijcour on 30 April 1644 (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 78). On 3 December 1649, Franss Courten, from Altena, mapmaker, widower of Anne de Blecourt, living on the Egelantiersgracht, was betrothed to Lysbet Dircx, from Haarlem, widow of Hendrikus Donkers, also living there (ibid.) He was buried in the Westerkerck on 8 June 1668 (ibid.) J. van der Waals wrote that he was a beroemde afzetter (a famous illuminator), whose work substantially increased the prices of black-and-white prints (De prentschat van Michiel Hinloopen, Exh. Cat. Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam, 1988, p. 144). His portrait was painted by Carel van Savoij (of INVNO 454) and engraved by Theodore Matham (J. de Maere and M. Wabbes, Illustrated Dictionary of 17th Century Flemish Painters, 1994), p.351). Frans Koerten's sister Marritgen Koerten married the painter Pieter Dircksz. van Santvoort (of R 23103) on 3 June 1633 (Briels, Vlaamse schilders p. 348). She may be the woman of that name who was said to be the widow of Nicolaes Koerten, silk cloth dealer, whose death inventory was taken on 18 March 1649 (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 526).
