BuyerJan Looten op de Niewendijck in de Pauw
Buyer FamilyLooten, Jan (Lourensz.)
Buyer NotesThe buyer, born in Amsterdam in 1618, of South Netherlandish origin, was the son of Lourens Jansz. Looten who lived at the same address (see R 24400) (Briels, laamse schilders, 1997, p. 354). On 19 September 1643, Jan Looten, from Amsterdam, 25 years old, assisted by his father Lourens Jansz. Looten, living on the Nieuwen Dijck, was betrothed to Cathalyntge Hermans, from Gulick (DTB 677/148, cited by Briels, ibid.) Lourens Loten paid a tax of 30 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 40vo, p. 10). Jan Looten was a painter of landscapes in the style of Jacob Ruysdael. He was only 20 years old at the time of the sale and probably had not yet joined the guild of St. Luke, which may explain why he was not designated as a schilder. The painter Jan Looten should not confused with Johannes or Jean Looten, the son of Charles (or Carel) Looten, of INVNO 286 of 1676.
