Buyer NotesFerdinand Schuylenburch, the son of Balthasar Schuylenburch, retail iron merchant in the Warmoesstraet (born in Antwerp about 1562) and of Geertruyd Mercijs, was born about 1597 (Elias, Vroedschap, p.336). He was the older brother of Frederick Schuylenburch of R 34735. In 1622, Ferdinand van Schuylenburg was portrayed in a group of militia men marching out to Zwolle by Claes Lastman (Pieter Lastman's brother). A separate copy of his portrait was made by A. Palamedes. An inscription on the back of this portrait confirms the information in his betrothal record cited below (Blankert, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, p. 169). Balthasar Schuylenburch invested 1,800 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares. His widow Gertruyt Mercijs was taxed 300 f. in 1631 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 211). In 1606, Balthasar, living op 't Water in Wesel, bought 7 shares in the Haarlem lottery (Lottery archive, 41 F 650). On 14 January 1636, Samuel Dircksz., smith, ceded to the widow of Balthasar Schuylenborgh, all the rights he had obtained from the W.I.C., including 100 f. a year for an invention in the casting of light cannons (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 101). On 16 October 1637, Ferdinandus van Schuylenburch, 40, and and Frederick van Schuylenburch, 38, declared at the request of the cloth merchant Gerloff Claesz., that they had known Claes Gerloffsz. (NA 695B, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 17 December 1638, Ferdinandus Schuijlenborg, from Amsterdam, 40 years old, assisted by his mother Geertruyd Marcijs, living op 't Water, was betrothed to Maria van Neck, from Amsterdam, 26, assisted by her mother Margrieta van Rijn, living on the Oude Schans (DTB 449/574). Maria van Neck was the sister of Weijntge van Neck (1610-1682) who married the merchant Jean Le Gouche on 8 May 1635 (Elias, ibid.) On Jean Legouche, merchant and insurer, see the NOTES to R 7591. Margrieta Jacobs van Rijn (1585-1652), the putative sister of Pieter Jacobsz. van Rijn of R 27935 and of Willem Jacobsz. (van Rijn) of R 31254, married the future admiral Jacob Cornelisz. van Neck (1564-1638) on 11 January 1604 (Elias, ibid.) For her death inventory, see INVNO 1289. Ferdinand Schuylenburch and Maria van Neck had their daughter Geertruit baptized in the O.K. on 3 November 1639 in the presence of Geertruit Marcijs, Margrieta van Rijn and Jan Legouche [brath ?] (DTB 7/225). Ferdinandus was a large-scale merchant op 't Ruslandt in Schuylenburgh and a director of the West Indian Company. Together with his brother Frederick of R 34735, he appeared in various notarial acts concerning the shares of the W.I.C. (e.g. an act of 19 January 1637, NA 415, film 6432). Ferdinand and Frederick van Schuylenburborgh both signed a petition of February 1645 calling for the strict enforcement of the currency regulations of 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 89). On 24 March 1648, Otten Aertsz. acknowledged a debt of 4,800 f. to Ferdinandus Schuylenburgh (NA 1027, Not. S. van der Piet). Ferdinandus was buried on 19 August 1652 (DTB 1091/12).
