| Buyer Family | Broeck(e), Pieter van den (II) | | Buyer Notes | Pieter van den Broecke (I) (1592-1633) was said to a sugar refiner in the following document of 1604. On 28 August of that year, Pieter van den Broeck(e) (I), sugar refiner, entered a protest concerning a letter of credit in the name of Hans Luycasz., merchant, drawn by Jacques de Morimont. The letter had been accepted by Hans van den Bergh (likewise sugar refiner, cited in the NOTES to R 27080 and R 28701), to whom the protest was addressed. There were rumors that Van den Bergh was insolvent (GAA, Extracten). Jacques de Morimont was the brother of Marie (Maiken) de Morimont who married Pieter van den Broecke (II) in 1580. Hans van den Bergh, married to Elisabeth de Morimont, the sister of Jacques de Morimont, had their twin son and daughter, named Abraham and Sara, on 13 October 1600. Pieter van den Broeck(e) I living in the Vergulde Kan in the Warmoesstraet bought lots in the Haarlem lottery for 1 f. 16 st. in 1606 (GAA,11/59 F 78). The address on the Warmoesstraat tends to confirm his identity. On 24 April 1624, Annetje Lourens, widow of Hans van den Broeck (I), with her guardian Pieter van den Broeck I (probably Hans's brother), sold her part in the house in the Warmoesstraet to Pieter Duymen (Kam, Waar was dat huis in de Warmoesstraat?, 1968 p. 355, 36/14). The following Van den Broecks appear to belong either to another branch of the family or to a totally separate family. Pieter van den Broeck, the son of Gregorius van den Broeck (of R 30845) and of Catharina Soolmans, was the brother of Marten Sollmans (II), portrayed by Rembrandt in 1634. This Pieter van den Broeck was baptized on 5 April 1615 (DTB 5/256). He was still living in the Warmoesstraet in 1640 when he published a lampoon poem with his brother-in-law Jacob Valcksz. called Milde gaven aen d'Amstelse jonckheijt ofte het laetste quartier des Amsterdamsche manneschijn, for which he was interrogated by the Amsterdam magistrates on 8 December 1640 (I. Prins, Amsterdamsche schimpdichters vervolgd, Jaarboek Amstelodamum 30(1933), pp. 199-202). At one point in the interrogation, on 8 December 1640, Pieter van den Broeck, about 24 years old (thus consistent with the date of baptism cited above), was asked by the Schout whether he had not been recently in the inn 't Schilt van Vranckrijck. This was the inn, at one point owned by Barend van Someren of INVNO 634, where auctions were sometimes held, including that of the estate of Van Someren at which Jacob Valcksz. bought prints and drawings. Van den Broeck answered yes, about 14 days ago. Asked whether he had spoken there with the son of the house (a son of Van Someren ?), he said no. However, the son in question had come to his house, with some one else, to see some paintings (om schilderijen te sien) and they may well have spoken over paintings (ibid. p. 209). From this, it may be inferred that Pieter van den Broeck was a collector and thus the more likely purchaser of the present lot. It is not known whether the following document refers to Pieter Gregorisz. van den Broeck or to some other individual. On 27 June 1637, Dirck van der Cooghen, representing Pieter Verbroeck, lodged a notarial complaint against Jan Haes, wine dealer. He alledged that Jan de Haes was supposed to accept and to pay for certain Vice-Roy tulip bulbs that he (de Haes) had contracted for (Posthumus, Economisch-Historisch Jaarboek 18(1934), pp. 238-9). An individual named Pieter van den Broeck, who may be identical with our buyer, was buried in the LKH on 8 June 1673 (DTB 1227/237). There were so many individuals named Pieter van der Broeck(e) that only the most systematic genealogical research can separate them out. |
