| Buyer Notes | The buyer is likely to be Mr. Jeroen, luteplayer, who paid a tax of 10 f. in 1631, at which time he lived on the North side of the Rheestraet (Kohier, fol. 308vo., p. 70). On 6 December 1619, Jeronimus Torel had bought a house on the Keisersgracht from Jan Egbertsz. (Hoppesack), hops dealer (Maandblad Amstelodamum 57(1970), p. 98). On 15 May 1626, in the accounting submitted to the Orphan Chamber for the heirs of the late Andries de Graeuw (INVNO 682 and 6820), Jeroen speelman was paid 4 f. for teaching the son (probably Andries de Graeuw de jonge) for lute playing (WK 5073/1191). In 1633, Ieronimus Toret (probably a misreading for Torel or Torell) and Willem Jansz., speelluyden of Amsterdam, were paid 208 f. for the purchase of various instruments by the city (Oud Holland 24(1906), p. 124). According to Dr. Rudolf Rasch of Utrecht University (letter of 24 March 1999), Jeronimus Torell was active as a musician in Amsterdam from 1597 to 1640. | |
