| Buyer Family | Raedt (Raet), Elias de (I) | | Buyer Notes | Elias de Raedt, of South Netherlandish origin, seems to have been the son of Aert de Raedt of Antwerp and the brother of Johanna de Raedt, who married Eduard Pels (see the NOTES to R 38618). He spent some time in Hamburg before he settled in Amsterdam, where he was fist noted in 1602 (Gelderblom, Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 312). He was first married to Catharina Pelgroms. Their daughter Catharina de Raet, who married Gommer Spranger (of R 31375) on 24 May 1622, was born in 1596 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 761). He then remarried with Janneken Aeriens some time before 18 August 1602, when Elijas de Raedt, merchant, and his wife Janneken Aeriens had their child Elijas (II) baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Jan van Lijbergen (DTB 4/42). He apparently remarried once more with Johanna Pieters Vloot, with whom he had a son baptized, named Walter, in the presence of Wilbort Symonsz. and Emerentia Nuits, on 23 October 1614 (DTB 5/120). His son Elias de Raet II, also merchant, was said to be 25 (which corresponds to the date of the above baptism) when he was betrothed to Isabelle (Isabeau) Visscher on 3 December 1627. Elijas de Raedt I assisted his son on this occasion (DTB 432/481). Elias de Raedt (or Ratt) I invested 30,000 f. in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares and 18,300 f. in the second subscription of 1612 (Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 61 and 259). Elias de Raet I died before 23 August 1632 when his widow was mentioned (NA 371, fol. 112, Not. W. Cluyt). It was probably his son Elias de Raet II who paid a tax of 325 f. in 1631, at which time he was living on the O.Z. Burchwal, near the St. Pieters kerckhoff (Kohier, fol. 241vo, p. 55 and Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, p. 148). On 26 January 1634, Elias de Raet (II), merchant, 32 (again corresponding to his year of baptism), testified at the request of Daniel de la Bistrate, merchant (cited in the TEXT of R 148 of Montias1), about a shipment of Cammericx cloth (NA 694B, film 4980, Not. J. Warnaerts). The insolvent inventory of Elias de Raedt (II) was drawn up for the Desolate Boedelskamer in 1644 (INVNO 1250). Johan Raij (of R 20339) and Aernhout de Raet declared themselves his sureties on 22 July 1644 (DBK 5072/872). Sara de Raet, the daughter of Elias de Raet II, married Christoffel Thijsz., widower of Magdalena Beltens, in 1659. By this time, Elias de Raedt II was already dead (Isabella van Eeghen in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 68(1976), p. 102). Christoffel Thijsz. was one of the chief creditors of Rembrandt. |
