Buyer | Gillis Smissaert tot Ketel |
Buyer Family | Smissaert, Gillis | Buyer Notes | The painter Gillis Smissaert was born about 1591 in The Hague, son of the merchant Jan Smissaert of Antwerp and of Susanna de Clerck. He was apparently the brother of Joan Carlo Smissaert, Lord of Niel (near Antwerp), who married Constantia Coymans on 26 September 1621 (see Elias, Vroedschap, p. 375). Gillis Smissaert may have been a pupil of Cornelis Ketel with whom he seems to have been staying when he bought the present lot. On 26 August 1616, Gillis Smissaert, from The Hague, 25 years old, assisted by his father Jan Smissaert, living in the Coninxstraet, was betrothed to Anna Cobout, widow of Michiel van Verbeecke, assisted by her father Arnout Cobbaut (of R 21250) (DTB 420/274). Together with Carel Hellemans (see R 31029), Mathias van Beeck, and Arent Elbertsz. Haen (see R 32514), he complained about a disturbance that had occurred when a morning serenade (aubade) was sung or played for Leonora Hellemans (see R 27451) (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 78(1933), p. 140). On 22 November 1616 (just over three months after the betrothal), Gilles Smitser and his wife Anna Cobbaut had their son Jan baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Jan Smissaert (his father) (DTB 39/440). Gillis Smissaert was the younger brother of Susanna Smissaert, born in Antwerp, who was 21 years old when she was betrothed to Francois Hustaert, also from Antwerp, on 4 May 1602. She was assisted by her father Jan Smissaert and her mother Susanna de Clerck (DTB 665/213). Francois Hustaert was probably the brother of Anna Hustaert, also from Antwerp, who married the painter Guilliam van Nieulandt de jonge in 1606 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 184). After the death of Francois Hustaert, Susanna Smissaert was again betrothed to the painter Abraham van den Bremden, from Middelburgh, on 27 September 1614 (Oud Holland, 3(1885), p. 71.) On 11 August 1620, the merchant Jan Geurtsz. Bogaert (R 21492) had a notary summoned Gillis Smitsaert concerning a painting by Frans Floris that Smitsaert had sold to Jan's brother Adriaen Geurtsz. Bogaert (of R 20920) for 126 f. without letting him know that he would have it copied before delivering it. Jan Geurtsz. insisted on immediate delivery and protested about its being copied (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 2033). In 1621, Smitsaert made a deposition, with Samuel de Meyne, to the effect that the painter Jacob van Nieulandt had known the painter Johannes Torrentius for a number of years (ibid. p. 266). In 1624, he was said to be a merchant in Amsterdam when he brought suit against the painter and dealer Jacques van der Lamen concerning a painting of a Cunstcamer to which several fine painters had contributed (NA 764, fol. 137, cited in Extracten and in Briels, Vlaamse schilders, 1997, pp. 350-1). On the auction sale held at the request of Jacques van der Lamen, see INVNO 698. Smissaert was living on the Princengracht near the Reestraet when he bought several lots in the Jan van Basse sale of 1637 (R 33792). A portrait of the Ouden Gillis Smissaert and of his wife (unnamed) was recorded in an Antwerp inventory (drawn up at the request of Pieter Smissaer, who may have been the son of Gillis Smissaert) dated 31 December 1660 (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen 8(1995), p. 176). Gillis's father Jan Smissaert does not seem to be identical with Johan Smissart who married Femmetje Elbinck in 1642 (see R 416 of Montias1). |
