BuyerJeremias van Casteren
Buyer FamilyCasteren (Castelijn ?), Jeremias van (I?)
Buyer NotesJeremias van Casteren was a broker in 1612 (Costboeck aengaende het sterfhuys van onsen vader zaliger Johan Thys, Archief Thys, no. 112A, Leyden University Library). Jeremias van Casteleyn was a merchant on the Heerengracht in de Stadt Praegh, married to Maria Harseleyn (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 888). It is not clear whether Casteren and Castelyn are alternative spellings of the same family name or whether they are two different persons. On 17 March 1637, Samuel Davids, merchant in London, transferred to Samuel [...], merchant in London, various goods (textiles) and in-debts presently in the hands of Jeremias Castelijn, merchant in Amsterdam (NA 487, film 6488, fol. 88, Not. E. Cocq). Jeremias Castelijn was buried in the F.K.on 14 June 1650 (DTB 1130/136). Jeremias Casteleyn (II), who was betrothed to Maria Harsselijn on 18 November 1644 (DTB 461/202) and who was active as a cloth merchant in 1665, was probably his son (Van Dillen,Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p. 737). On 4 August 1648, Jeremias Castelijn (II) and Maria Harseleijn had their daughter baptized in the O.K. (DTB 8/171). On 25 September 1645 and 14 June 1650, a child of Jeremias Casteleijn (II) was buried in the F.K. 4 f. were paid to the church (DTB 1130/109 and DTB 1130.136). N. de Roever suggested that the present lot might be identical with een groot stuck gemaeckt by Hans van Aecken wesende een Adam en Eva van olyverff (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 40). The identification is plausible.
