Buyer Notes | Jan Fonteijn (1608-1668) was a silk cloth dealer, born in Aken. He was a Mennonite. He was the son of Jean Fontaine Thomasz. and of Catherine de la Fontaine , dit Wicart. He was made a Ridder of the Holy Roman Empire in 1653. He married Anna Hooftman, daughter of Martin Hooftman and Angnes van Collen, on 5 April 1633 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 751). By his marriage, he became the brother-in-law of Abraham Alewijn of R 25547. The couple passed their testament on 6 November 1636 (NA 949, film 1172). Hendrick Gerritsz. Pot painted the portraits of Jan Fonteijn and his wife. Jan Fonteyn bought only works on paper at the Spranger sale but one or more marble statues (for 44 f.) at the auction organized by Jacques Breijel of Antwerp on 13 September 1646 (where Rembrandt also bought) (J. Denuce, Na Pieter Paul Rubens, p. 56). In February 1645, Jan Fonteyn and a number of other merchants signed a petition to the Amsterdam authorities calling for the maintenance of the 1622 regulations on the currency (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P. 59(1925), p. 89). In 1668, his heirs sold his library. A sale of his papierkunst was announced, which featured works by Lucas van Leyden, Albrecht Dürer, and other German, Italian, French masters, and other masters, including Rubens and Rembrandt. The auction sale took place in the Keiszerskroon on the Kalverstraat in 1670. According to the advertisement for the sale, there had never been sold such an important cabinet previously (Jaap van der Veen, Het netwerk van Rembrandt in Rembrandts schatkamer, Exh. Cat. Het Rembrandthuis, Amsterdam, 1999, p. 142.) The silk cloth dealer by the name of Jan Fonteijn must not be confused with the goldsmith of that name (R 27942), with the doctor (R 7647), also of that name, or with Jean de la Fontaine, who married Margaretha le Thor, the daughter of Johannes le Thor II. | |
