Commentary | The house of Francoijs de Penij (or Penijn) and of Sara Lodewycx, de Witte Lelij, was located near that of Anthonij Thijsz., the guardian of Francois's son Augustijn (Kohier, fol. 157vo, p. 36). The INTRO to this inventory links Anthonij Thijsz., whose house on the Breestraet was inherited by his brother Christoffel Thijsz. and by Pieter Belten, who, together, sold it to Rembrandt, on the one hand, and Jan Tivaert de jonge, whose father, Jan Tivaert de oude (of R 20955), was a sugar refiner and probable art dealer in Amsterdam and Utrecht, on the other. Among the assets of the estate was an obligation incurred by Jan Tivert (de oude ?) for 597 f. 17 st. on 11 August 1627. st. The heirs of Francojs de Penijn paid a tax of 60 f. in 1631, at which time they still lived on the Breestraet (Kohier, fol. 157vo., p. 3). For more details on Francoijs de Penij or Penijn, see the NOTES to R 27716 of Montias2. |
