Commentary	The inventory with its numerous paintings (some without frames) suggests that Jan Tjepkes may have been an art dealer as well as an innkeeper. De 3 Moriaenen was an inn in which the soap-makers held their meetings and their annual banquet at the beginning of the 17th century (qv R 23383 of Montias2). On 11 January 1625, Jan Tiebke van den Schellingh, 24, no living parents, assisted by Diert Cornelisz., living on the Brouwery gracht, was betrothed to Trijn Jans Wttewyck, 26, assisted by her snaar (stepdaughter) Jacobje Adriaens. Trijn Jans was illiterate (DTB 670/20). On 16 January (thus 5 days before his betrothal and some days before his marriage), Jan Tjepkes van den Schellingh, 24 years old, was baptized in the O.K. He was said to be living on the Brouwerygracht to the north of the Bloemstraet next to de Brack (DTB 6/104). Jan Tjepkes was probably born in Schellingh, an island in the North Sea, inhabited in large part by Mennonites. He probably decided to convert to the Reformed Church upon his betrothal to a Reformed girl.
