Commentary | Adriaen Banck began his business career by working as the servant (dienaer) of Hans Vrancx (of R 20713) who, on 24 April 1638, ordered him to appear before the directors of the V.O.C. in the chamber of Amsterdam to transfer to Pieter and Jacob Valck, merchants, an action with the face value of 500 pounds Vlaems (NA 1556, fol. 69, Not. Cappoen). On 12 November 1638, Vrancx had him transfer a sum of 500 pounds Vlaems capital to Jan van Bassen. The latter cannot of course be identical with the art dealer and painter Jan van Basse I of INVNO 832 who had died in 1637, nor with his son Jan van Basse II who died before January 1637. Adriaen Banck bought a painting of Susanna from Rembrandt about 1647. He was the executor of the testament of Eva Ruwardus, the widow of the predicant Eleaser Swalmius. He was married to Swalmius's daughter Hilletje. He was a dealer in canvas (canvashandelaer). On 16 October 1661, Francois Beaumont was said to owe the boedel of Adriaen Banck 10,550 f. as part (in mindering) from the promised purchase price on a house on the Heeregracht on the West side (DBK 5072/514(old)). On Eva Ruwardus and Eleaser Swalmius, see the TEXT of INVNO 352 (R 269). Adriaen Maen was his brother-in-law. |
