CommentaryThe owner of the goods in this inventory was Jan Claesz. Ansloo III, who apparently belonged to another branch of the family than the cloth merchant of the same name who was born in 1605 and was buried on 5 January 1647 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 449). The, latter, Jan Claesz. Anslo (I), was the son of Claes Claesz. Anslo I (of INVNO 1134) and of Giertje Jans. He was living on the Nieuwen Dijck in 't vergulde schilt when he married Fockeltge Pietersdr. van Hoorn (of R 25490) on 17 January 1627 (ibid. and the NOTES to R 1029 of Montias1). Their son Jan Anslo II, born in 1635 and buried on 20 October 1663, was married to Margaretha Bas (1641-1663). He was a spices merchant who lived on the Keisersgracht in a house (no. 142 today) which he acquired in 1640 (E. van Houten, Grachten, p. 56). From the Orphan Chamber document cited below, he was born about 1614. According to an article in the Nederlandsche Leeuw (49(1931), col. 213-4), he was said to be a (grand?) nephew of Cornelis Claesz. Ansloo I, the teacher of the Mennonite community and friend of the poet Joost van den Vondel. Jan Claesz. Ansloo III married Griet Jacobs Leeuw on 2 July 1637. The couple passed their testament on 3 April 1640. In this testament Jan Claesz. Ansloo and his wife the honorable Grietje Jacobs Leeuwen stipulated that the survivor of the two would keep the movable goods, including the jewelry and the paintings (NA 421, Not. Jacob Jacobsz., film 6438). David Leeuw, who may have been Grietje Leeuw's brother, was a rich merchant on the Rockin, married to Cornelia Hooft, whose daughter Wijntje married Aernout van Lennep in 1682 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 967.) It should be noted that Dirck Leeuw (David Leeuw's brother ?), who was born about 1614, married Maria Ansloo, born about 1620, on 20 March 1639. She was said to be the daughter of Maritje Jans de Vogel (daughter of Jan de Vogel of R 26637) and of Claes Claesz. Ansloo (II) (however, see below) (Nederlandsche Leeuw 64(1947), col. 181). On 17 April 1631, Claes Claesz. Anslo de jonge (III), merchant, brought 20,000 f. to the Orphan Chamber on behalf of his three children, Jan, 17, Cornelis, 14, and Maria, 11, whose late mother was Maria Jans de Jonghe (not de Vogel!) (WK 5073/789). It is not known whether Marritje Anslo(o), who married Dr. Isaac Pontanus in 1672, was identical with Maria Anslo, the daughter of Claes Claesz. Anslo de jonge (III) who was said to be 11 years old in 1631. On 9 September 1666, Geertruid Anslo (born on 16 April 1640), assisted by her father Jan Claasse Anslo (III), living on the Keizersgracht, was betrothed to Adriaen van Aldewerelt de jonge (ibid.) The Van Aldewerelts, like the Ansloos, were Mennonites.
