CommentaryJoris de Wijse was baptized on 7 January 1621 as the son of Jurriaen de Wijse and Trijntge Joris. The father was the collector of excise for the Waag (the weighing station in Amsterdam). On 2 September 1637, the father apprenticed Joris with the notary Jan Verhey for two years. According to the contract, the 16-year old Joris was to live with Jan Verhey and receive his instruction in the art of notariaenschap. He was also to take lessons from the professors in the illustre school (the Academy on the Keisersgracht). The cost of the apprenticeship was 200 f. a year. On 20 December 1642, Joris de Wijse, assisted by his father Juriaen de Wijse, was betrothed to Adriana van Heusden, daughter of Captain Cornelis van Heusden (who was also a fencing master, according to the NOTES of R 7616 of Montias2). On 4 September 1663, the wife of Joris de Wijse made a declaration concerning a large painting by Emanuel de Witte that hung in her voorhuijs in her house in the Cingel, which belonged to De Witte, her previous commissael (or commensael) (boarder). De Wijse's inventory had been made as a fugitive on 30 June 1663. Joris de Wijse, in addition to being a notary, probably alse dealt in art. He was buried on 24 October 1664 (I. van Eeghen, Twee zeventiende eeuwse notarissen: Joris de Wijse en Jeuriaan de Vos Maandblad Amstelodamum 67(1980), pp. 102-108).
