| Commentary | Johannes le Maire was the son of Jacques Aernouts le Maire and Catharina Pieters de Berg. He was inscribed as a student in theology in Leiden on 16 June 1599 when he was 25 years old. On 20 January 1607, Joannes le Maire, Dienaer des Godlycken Woords (predikant) in Amsterdam, 33, assisted by his brother Ysaack le Maire, was betrothed to Marie Cocquel dite Mercier from Emden (DTB 412/153, cited in Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p. 372). Isaack le Maire was a prominent merchant, one of the founders of the V.O.C. He was married to Maria Walraven. Johannes's sister Catharina le Maire (II) was married to Jacques Damman (NA 661, fol. 80vo, Not. J. Warnaerts). Joannes le Maire assisted his sister-in-law Janneken Mercier (the sister of his wife Marie Mercier) when she was betrothed to Carel Quina (of R 30687 of Montias2) on 5 March 1619 (Briels, op. cit. p. 371). He was also the brother-in-law of Jacques Mercier II (the brother of Janneken Mercier) of R 20399. The preacher Johannes le Maire paid a tax of 40 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 7, p. 3). He died on 4 June 1642 (De Navorscher 21(1871), p. 583). The children of Johannes le Maire and Marie le Mercier included Maria le Maire who, on 4 November 1612, was betrothed to Daniel Braems, jeweler in London. He was the son of Jan Braems (of R 23694 of Montias2) and of Abigael van Haringhoeck (Nederlandsche Leeuw 87(1970), col. 267-8). The son of Johannes le Maire, named Isaack le Maire (II), succeeded him as predikant in Amsterdam. |
