Commentary | The (ex ?) cake baker Jan Maes, who was formerly married to Anna van der Meer, is not identical with Jan Maes, married to Trijntgen Pieters, of INVNO 744. It is not clear which of the two (if not a third), living on the Rockin, paid a tax of 30 f. in 1631 (Kohier fol. 251, p. 57). Paulus (van) Heemskerck was a rich tobacco merchant. He seems to be identical with Paulus van Beest van Heemskerck who freighted ships in company with Pieter Hulft of R 31228 of Montias2. Paulus van Heemskerck signed the Remonstrant petition of 1631. He was probably related to the wealthy widow Machtelt van Beest van Heemskerck who lived in Delft next to the house of Maria Thins, the mother-in-law of Vermeer. |
