CommentaryOn 18 January 1614, Barent Lunden, wax-bleacher (wasbleyker), 28, living in the Hooghstraet (24 years), assisted by Janneken Sautyns, his mother, was betrothed to Catharyne van Sichem, from Basel, 28, living on the Monkelbaensburghwal (15 years), assisted by her father Christoffel van Sichem (de oude) (of INVNO 604) (DTB 417/34). Earlier, on 23 March 1613, Christoffel van Sichem de jonge (son of Christoffel van Sichem de oude), from Basel, engraver of figures (figuursnijder) was betrothed to Anneken Lunden, from Antwerp, 31, living on the Rokin, assisted by her mother Janneken Lunden and her uncle Daniel Sautijn (Oud Holland 2(1884), p. 206). Anneken Lunden was the older sister of Barent Lunden. Daniel Sautijn, born in Antwerp about 1556, married Maria, daughter of Pieter van der Moere, in 1595. He was probably the brother of Janneken Sautyns, the mother of Barent Lunden, and of Huybert Sautijns, cited below. (On the Sautijn family, which invested heavily in the first subscription to V.O.C. shares, see Van Dillen, Het oudste aandeelhoudersregister, pp. 119, 195, and Elias, Vroedschap, p. 575). At some point Barent Lunden became tax farmer on cattle, a risky occupation that may have led to his bankruptcy. On 27 September 1622, Gerrit, the son of Barent Lunden and Lyntje Lunden was baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Gerrit Jacobsz. Hoon and Joanna Everwijns. Gerrit Lunden was the future painter. Joanna Everwijns is likely to be identical with Joanna Sautijn who was betrothed to Willem van Everwijn II (of R 20426) on 19 April 1619. On 16 July 1619, Bernert, son of Bernert Lunden and Catelijn van Sichem, was baptized in the presence of Christoffel van Sichem (II?). On 12 February 1626, Janneken, daughter of Barnart Lunden and Katarina Lunden was baptized in the presence of Sr. Huybert Sautijn and Joffr. Janne Lunden. Huybert Sautijn, merchant, was associated with his brother Gillis Sautijn (born in the Southern Netherlands about 1555). On 7 July 1635, Abraham van de Hecke, from Antwerp, painter, living in the Heerestraet, assisted by Christoffel van Sichem, was betrothed to Catharina Lunden, assisted by her parents Baerent and Catharina Lunden (Oud Holland 3(1885), p.148). Abraham van der Hecke(n) lived from 1637 to 1653 in Amsterdam and from 1655 to his death in 1669 in The Hague. He was the son of the painter Samuel van der Hecken (Briels, Vlaamse schilders p.335). On 20 September 1635, Pieter Nieukerken, fur worker, insinuated the painter Samuel van der Hecke and his daughter Magdalentge, claiming that he, Samuel, in the hearing of several persons, had said that the wife of the insinuant (Nieukerken) had committed adultery, that the predikanten had therefore denied her access to the Lord's table (communion), and that she was a whore. Samuel van der Hecke persisted, saying that a predikant had told him she had taken pills against the pox (syphillis) (NA 1184, fol. 138, Not. J. de Vos). On 27 September of the same year, the honorable Catarina van Sichem, wife of Barent Lunden, 56, Catarina Lunden, wife of Abraham van der Hecke, 20, Hendrick Puijn, 24, Annitge Harmens, wife of Jan Harmensz., tailor, 26, and Berchie Tonis, spinster, 18, made a deposition at the request of Grietgen Hendricx, wife of Pieter Nieukercken. Berchge Tonis had gone to the house of Samuel van der Hecke to collect some money that Van der Hecke owed to the producent (Grietgen Hendricx). Catharina van Sichem, Catarina Lunde and Heyndrick Puijm had been present, about five months ago, and heard Magdalentje, in the house of Cataline van Sichem, openly say that the producent (Grietgen), had been in her house with a certain person named Jan Roep (probably Jan Roup of R 20081), had taken out Jan Roep's manliness (mannelickheijt) out of his pants and had done further dirty and shameful things, adding that she herself had seen the same through a hole in the ceiling of the room. Catarina Lunden, by herself, testified that Sara van der Hecke, the sister of Magdalentje, had told her, at the time the producent was still young, that her husband should make a pasquille (libel) at the onus of the producent, which he would then tack on to trees or spread, which her husband had refused to do (NA 1184, fol. 180 and fol., Not. J. de Vos). About 25 October 1639, Barent Linden, 56 (three years old than he made himself to be at the time of his betrothal, testified at the request of Aeltge Veeckers that, in the year 1634, he had delived to Eduart Derents, Englishman, a certain quantity of tobacco (NA 1625, fol. 237, Not. Gysbert Vliet). On 11 April 1643, Gerrit Lunden, from Amsterdam, assisted by his mother Cathalina Lunden, the father having signified his consent, living on the Coninxgracht, was betrothed to Agniet Mathijs, from Antwerp, assisted by her mother Geertruyt Mathys, 23, also living there. On 23 March 1651, Cathalyna van den Hecken, 37, wife of Abraham van den Hecken, made a declaration (Bredius, Künstler-inventare p. 101 of the Nachträge). On 27 October 1652, Anna, daughter of Gerret Lunden and Angeniet Mathys, was baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Barent Lundens (Oud Holland 3(1885), p. 225). Janneken Lunden, the daughter of Barent Lunden, cited in the INTRO, was baptized in 1626 (see above). Barent Lunden was a tax collector (farmer) for the taxes on cattle. This responsibility was generally auctioned off to the highest bidder, who could become insolvent if the taxes he was able to collect were less than the amount he had bid. In a request to the Magistrates of Amsterdam, dated December 1659, Gerrit Lunden, wine dealer, declared that his father Barent Lunden, tax master for cattle, had been afflicted with dementia (Kindtze kranckheit, due to old age) for about 6 to 8 weeks, so that he could not handle any business. His household and his small means are presently managed by his daughter, the requirant's sister, Janneken Lunden. Gerrit Lunden asked the judges to have the goods of Barent Lunden inventarized for otherwise they might be delapidated by his sister. He claims his father to be 80 years old, even though he was probably only about 73 (Bredius, Künstler-inventare p. 969). On 23 September 1669, Catharina Lundens, widow of the painter Abraham van der Hecken, declared that she had kept a chest belonging to her daughter Sara van der Hecken who had died in The Hague. Her brother Gerrit Lunden witnessed the act (Bredius, op.cit. p. 970). On the banrkupt inventory of Gerrit Lunden, dated 16 January 1671, see INVNO
