Commentary | On 30 November 1629, Abel Rogiers, from Brugge, widower of Josyntie Engsa, silk spinner (syreder), living on the Heeregracht, was betrothed to Sara de Marees, from Emden, 34, assisted by her uncle Abraham de Marees de oude and her aunt Grietie Ysbrants (DTB 434/368). Abraham de Marez I was the brother of Nicolaes de Marez (I) who died in 1624. Nicolaes is likely to have been Sara's father. On 9 February 1631, Abel Rogiers and Sara de Marez had their daughter Ester baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Bartholomeus de Marees (DTB 41/121). On 16 February 1638, Juffr. Anna des Marees, widow of Jan Nieuburgh, merchant, named her neve Bartolomeus des Marees in her testament (NA 952, Not. B. Baddel). Nicolaes de Marees (I), the putative father of Sara, was married as a widower to Margareta Segers, the daughter of Bartholomeus Segers, who is likely to have been Bartholomeus de Marees's grandfather. Bartholomeus would then have been Sara's brother. On 18 April 1632, the couple had their son Abel baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Niclaes de Marees (II) (DTB 41/188). The witness cannot have been Sara's father since Abraham's brother of that name died in 1624 (see the NOTES to R 20987). He is likely, however, to have been her brother. On 2 September 1652, an accord was signed among the creditors of Sara de Marees for reduction of her debts (DBK 5072/873). |
