Commentary | Geertruijdt Loijse (or Loijson) and Adriaen van Nieuwlandt I were the parents of the painters Adriaen van Nieulandt II and Jacob van Nieulandt cited in the INTRO. Adriaen van Nieulandt died in 1603. Both the brothers Joris (married, first to Rachel Clinquant, and, second to Baycken de Clerck) and Adriaen van Nieulandt (I), were pen sellers. Adriaen I, who was active in Antwerp, invested 300 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1602. Another brother of Joris and Adriaen I was the painter Willem van Nieulandt, who died in Rome in 1603. The children of Adriaen van Nieulandt I and of Geertruyt Loyson (or Louijse) were Willem van Nieulandt II (1584-1635), painter in Rome, and the painters Adriaen van Nieulandt II (1587-1658) and Jacob van Nieulandt (c.1592-1634) cited above. On 3 November 1626, Baycken de Clerck, assisted by her stepson and guardian Joris van Nieulandt (II), declared before the Orphan Chamber that the same Joris, 27, Susanna, 25, Anna. 22, Rachel, 19, the children from the first bed left by Jacob van Nieuwlant (I), pen seller, the mother (of whose children) was Rachel Clinquant, together with Pieter, 18, Sara, 15, Tobias, 13, Abigael, 11, Baeyken, 8, and Jan, 2, the children of the second bed procreated by Baeyken de Clerck, stood to inherit 500 f. from their uncle Guilliam (Willem) (I) who had died in Rome. This sum was turned over to the Orphan Chamber by Adriaen van Nieulandt on 4 November 1626 (WK 5073/789). In the death inventory of Baycken de Clerck, widow of Joris van Nieulandt, pen seller, dated 6 October 1632, five children were mentioned: Pieter, master turner (mr. drayer), married; Sara van Nieulant, 21; Tobias van Nieulant, 19; Abigael van Nieulant, 17; and Baiken van Niuelant, 14. Adriaen van Nieulant was said to be the children's cousin (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, pp.180-1). Abigael van Nieulandt married, first, the painter Salomon (de) Koninck and, second, Cors Jansz. Buyck. The inventory of the latter, taken on 20 February 1673 contained several pictures by Salomon de Koninck (Bredius, op.cit. p. 170).
