Commentary | On Pauwels de Vries, son of Hans de Vries, see R 28936 of Montias2. His widow Maycken Godelet lived in a room of the house of Margareta Hallaer, widow of Hans Ransen. Hans (or Jan) Ransen, merchant, is cited in the NOTES to R 20995 of Montias2. The merchant Symon van Swieten was the husband of Maijcken Breugels, the daughter of Pieter Bruegel II and the granddaughter of Pieter Bruegel I. In 1627, Sijmon van Swieten appeared in Amsterdam as the husband and guardian of Maijcken Breugels. He declared that he had received out of the hands of Anthony de Leeuw (of INVNO 569), merchant in this city, a painting representing Christ carrying the cross, painted by the appearer's wife's grandfather Pieter Breugel, which he, appearer, had bought for 750 f. plus 215 f. cash, all this in fulfilment of the bequest of 1,000 f. that Metken Thijmens, widow of Jaques Carbeels, had made to Elisabet Godelet, the appearer's wife's mother (NA 661, fol. 135vo-136, cited in Briels, Vlaamse schilders, p.331). Elisabet Godelet is presumed to have been the sister of Sara and of Maijcken Godelet of the present inventory. Sijmon van Swieten, from Leyden, assisted by Aernout Elsevier (the painter), his brother-in-law, was betrothed in Leiden to Maria Bruegels, from Antwerp, on 16 February 1618 (Briels, loc.cit.) Jacques Carbeel and Metge Thijmens were the uncle and aunt of Sara, Elisabet, and Maijcken Godelet. Carbeel, together with Jan le Bruyn and Alexander van der Berge (of R 29985 of Montias2), provided financial support for Sion Luls's trading with Moscow (see the NOTES to R 29985). Elisabeth van Swieten, the daughter of Simon van Swieten and Maria Bruegels, baptized on 28 May 1621, was betrothed to Pieter Walpoth, son of the well-known Delft publisher Jan Pietersz. Waelpoth, on 8 October 1648 (De Navorscher 97(1658), p.100). | |
