Commentary | Daniel Roelandt (Rulandt), the son of Pieter Rulandt, was a merchant who, together with his brother-in-law Johannes van Wickevoort (of R 21502 of Montias2), was active in business with Russia. Together, the partners exported flax and goatskins to Liefland in the Baltic (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p. 275). In 1631, Daniel Roelandts, living on the O.Z. Voorburchwal, paid a tax of 100 f. (Kohier fol. 239vo, p.55). According to a deposition dated 16 December 1641, Daniel Roelants had delivered drawn and spun silver and gold to Annetgen Andries who had resold the lot to Claes Henricksz. Hooghvelt (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p.330). Roelandts seems to have sold other merchandise as well, apparently on commission. There were 18 large bales of wool in his inventory which were said to belong to Emanuel Ammia van Hattingh in Utrecht, who had sent them on commission. There was also a good deal of copperware among the coopmanschappen. Daniel Rulandts's sister Elisabeth married Johannes van Vickevoort (of R 24559 of Montias2) in 1619. He was also the brother-in-law of Abraham (Hansz.) Pelt, who was married to Helena van Gansepoel. Abraham (Hansz.) Pelt was surety on his behalf when he became insovent (see INTRO above). Roelandts was apparently an investor in polders located in the Buitenvelder (he came to an agreement in 1636 with Tatick Jansz. of R 26643 of Montias2, together with several other investor-merchants, on unpaid rents on the polder). Jochem Colijns, who was assigned by the commissaries of the DBK to supervise the present insolvent inventory was probably the son of Philips Jochemss Colijns of INVNO 199. | |
