CommentaryOn 3 June 1622, Andries Polster, from Cologne, 28, living in the Nes, was betrothed to Aeltgien van der Veen, assisted by her mother Aeltgien Becker, living in the Warmoesstraet (DTB 427/160). He was the son of Andries Polster I, who invested 900 f. in the first subscription for V.O.C. shares in 1602. Andries Polster II was a buyer at WK auction (one lot of 18 Keysers of Rome in 1626). For bio-details see the NOTES to R 23420 of Montias2. After he was declared insolvent in May 1644, his mother-in-law Aeltgien (Jaspers) Becker, widow of Balthasar van der Veen, passed a procuration on July 6 of the same year naming Balthasar van de Bogaert to obtain an accord with the creditors (DBK 5072/872). Balthasar van der Veen, named above, cannot be identical with the painter of that name (INVNO 473) who was still alive in 1650. On the basis of the contents of the inventory (especially the warehouse), it may be inferred that Polster was a dealer in tropical woods as well probably as in fine furniture, such as upright desks with painted panels, made from such woods (especially ebony). From the print of Martin Luther in Polster's inventory, it may tentatively be inferred that he was Lutheran.
