CommentaryOn 10 July 1657, Pieter van Veen, from Amsterdam, 23, no living parents, assisted by his guardian Goosen Sirxma, was betrothed to Maria Wachtendonck, from Amsterdam, 18, assisted by her father Pieter Wachtendonck, living on the Roosegracht (DTB 679/105). Pieter Wachtendonck was a Mennonite broker, born in Goch (I. van Eeghen in Maandblad Amstelodamum 1953, p.40). On 4 July 1649, Pieter van Veen and Maria van Wachtendonck had their son Pieter baptized in the Remonstrant Church. No witnesses were cited (DTB 301/47). Goosen Sirxma, the guardian of Pieter van Veen, is probably identical with Goswninus Sirpma who became insolvent in 1635 (see NOTES to R 26769 of Montias2). Pieter Wachtendonck, the father of Maria Wachtendonck, is probably identical with the individual of that name who, together with Janneken de Raet, witnessed the baptism of Pieter, son of Anthonij Thysz. and Magdalena Beltens, on 25 May 1631 (INVNO 1088). According to an act of 2 June 1634, he was then married to Annetje Schonenburgh, who,on this date, acknowledged receiving rent money from Mr. Mathijs Evertsz., schoolmaster (NA 1184). On 16 June 1640, Pieter Wachtendonck acknowledged owing Dr. Nicolaes Fonteyn (of R 19445 of Montias2) a loose obligation for 85 1/2 f. per year, which was probably for a mortgage on a house in the Rozengracht. On 16 May 1645, the obligation was dissolved (paid up) (Van Eeghen, loc.cit.) He was buried on 20 April 1669 in the N.K. His post-mortem inventory of April 1669 (which has not been located) contained paintings by Steven van Goor, Gillis de Hondecoeter, Paulus Potter, Jacques de Geyn, and Jan Mienze Molenaer (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1237). In 1675, his son Jacob (Maria's brother) bought the house on the Rozengracht for f. 4,880 (Van Eeghen, ibid.) On 8 February 1674, Jacob Wachtendonck rented Rembrandt's house at the end of the Rosengracht for 315 f. a year (Bredius, loc. cit.)
