Commentary | Among the books: Bijbel vant nieuwe oversettingh in folio. Elias Tael was first betrothed to Susanna du Gardijn on 7 March 1623 (DTB 427/36). His next wife was Elisabeth Haen with whom he was betrothed on 9 April 1631 (DTB 37/156). On 29 January 1655, Elias Tael, from Delft, widower of Elisabeth Haen, assisted by his brother-in-law Sebastiaen Schellekens, living on the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Aletta van Bernagie, from Dordrecht, 37, no living parents, assisted by Isaack Bernaerds (of R 33620 of Montias2) and by her aunt Elisabeth Francken (DTB 474/137). Sebastiaen Schellekens was the executor of the testament of Herman Outhuijsen of INVNO 301. On 20 April 1634, Herbert Gillisz., merchant, insinuated Elias Tael, likewise merchant, for failing to pay for certain drawn silver (silverdraet) which he had bought (NA 595, fol. 544, Not. Lamberti). Herbert (or Huybrecht) Gillisz., who was also a goldsmith, was the brother of Catalyn Gillis, the wife of Gerrit Velthuysen (WK 5073/789 of 27 March 1631). In 1635, Sr. Elias Tael and Pieter Haen de jonge, merchants, were authorized by the widow of Pieter van der Straten and by Jacobus van der Straten, together with the heirs of Gillis Borremans (cited in the NOTES of R 35477), to draw up a procuration (NA 520, film 6505, Not. Westfrisius). Pieter Haen de jonge was probably related to Tael's second wife Elisabeth Haen. On Pieter Haen de jonge see the NOTES to R 21700 of Montias2. On 15 October 1635, Tael gave a procuration to his servant Nicolaes van Eremont (Engremont) (II?) to collect money owed to him in Sweden, Norway, England, Scotland and France (NA 520, film 6505, Not. Westfrisius). In 1638, he acted as an intermediary in a transaction, concerning the printing of books in Hebrew, between Menasseh van Israel and Juda Cohen. In a subsequent document of 25 August 1639 regarding these Hebrew bibles, which were supposed to be exported to Poland, he was called Elias Dael, living in the Warmoesstraet (thus at the address above) in the Vergulde Bril. Salomon and Jacob Lievensz. had ordered the bibles to be printed (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P., 144(1974), pp. 193 and 237). On 13 December 1644, Nicolaes Engremont (II?) (cited above), assisted by his good friend Elias Tael, merchant, signed a pre-nuptial agreement with Anna Lestevenon, assisted by her parents Daniel Lestevenon and Juffr. Anna Venturin, Jacob Venturin, her uncle, and Abraham Lestevenon, her cousin, merchants (NA 1597, Not. W. Hasen). On Abraham and Daniel Lestevenon, see the TEXT of R 1075 of Montias1. In February 1645, he joined a number of Amsterdam merchants in a petition calling for the maintenance of the currency regulation of 1622 (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.G.P., 59(1925), p. 89). Maritge Tael, the daughter of Elias Tael and of Aletta Bernagie, was baptized on 28 June 1658. She married Pieter Haack van Hoven on 6 April 1677 and died on 13 February 1713 (Elias, Vroedschap, p. 769). |
