CommentaryJan van Hilten, who was probably Verbiest's brother-in-law (the brother of his wife Magdalena van Hilten), declared himself surety for the insolvent Verbiest on 6 May 1655. On 17 June 1627, Jan van Hilten and Anna van Hilten had their daughter Anna baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Raechel Nieulants (DTB 6/176). On 18 April 1645, Jan van Hilten, courantier (publisher of a news sheet) was insinuated for a delay in paying a debt of 1,000 f. (Van Dillen, Bronnen tot de geschiedenis van het bedrijfsleven R.G.P. 144(1974), p.438). On 1 May 1648, Guilliam Verbiest, from Amsterdam, wine dealer, 27, living in the Beurssraet, assisted by his sister Sara Verbiest, was betrothed to Magdalena van Hilten, from Amsterdam, 17, also living in the Beursstraet, assisted by her father Jan van Hilten (DTB 465/488).
