Commentary | The brothers Hendrick and Wouter Bosschaert were both from South Netherlands (Gent or Antwerp). (A note in the present inventory cites an accounting concerning Johannes Andriesz. Bosschaert in Antwerp from uncle Bosschaert). Hendrick Bosschaert was married to Catrijn le Maire, the daughter of Adam le Maire, the son of Jacques le Maire, an important overseas trader (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p.98). There were two men named Paulus Bosschaert in the next generation, one was the merchant Paulus Hendricksz. Bosschaert (or Busschaert) of the present inventory, who died in 1620, and the other, his cousin, the cake baker Paulus Woutersz. Bosschaert of R 27456 of Montias2. It appears from a note to the INTRO that Paulus Hendricksz. Bosschaert was married to the sister of Catharina van Solt, who died before him. Note the portrait of Wouter Bosschaert and his wife in the inventory. Catharina van Solt, married to Abraham Seewens, was the daughter of Hans van Sol(d)t I of R 29281 of Montias2. The portraits of Melanchton and Luther in the inventory suggest that Paulus Hendricksz. was Lutheran. | |
