CommentaryThe owner of the goods, Cornelis Dircksz., tobacco dealer, who ceded these goods to Jeronimus Rans(t) in precario, has not been identified. Jeronimus (or Hieronimus) Rans was baptized in the Z.K. on 21 December 1607 and buried on 21 December 1660. He was the son of Lenaert Rans (1576-1619) and of Constantia Coymans (1582-1652), the daughter of Jeronimus Coeymans, cited in the NOTES to R 31375 of Montias2. He was a dealer in East Indies goods. He lived on the Oude Schans in de twee Tygers and had himself a house built by Philips Vinckboons in the Purmer, not far from Edam. He was Lieutenant of the Militia in 1658 and a regent of the Rasp- en Tuchthuys in 1657. He married Barbara Carel (1611-1678), daughter of Jan Jansz. Carel de jonge and of Anna Jans ten Grootenhuys on 1 October 1630 (Elias, Vroedschap van Amsterdam, p.542). Jeronimus Rans(t) was a prominent figure, as was (his brother?) Pieter Rans, in the extraction of peat in the Beemster in the period 1616-1618 (Jaarboek Amstelodamum 39(1942), p.13). Jeronimus Rans was named guardian by the Orphan Chamber over the children of Gommer Spranger of INVNO 305 on 25 November 1640 (WK 5073/789; for details, see the NOTES to R 31375). On 14 August 1648, together with his wife Jacoba, he assisted his niece Jacoba Rans when she signed a pre-nuptial contract with Gillis Valckenier (for details see the NOTES to R 20402 of Montias2). In 1657, he was cited as the guardian of the children of Floris Soop of INVNO 315.
