Commentary | On 5 May 1661, Cornelis Kick, from Amsterdam, 27, assisted by his mother Stijntje Cornelis Duyster, widow of Simon Kick, living in the Koninghstraet, was betrothed to Cornelia Spaeroogh, from Amsterdam, 24, assisted by her father Harmen Claesz. Spaeroogh (of INVNO 131), living in the Nes. Stijntje (Christina) Cornelis Duyster was the sister of the painter Willem Duyster. The painter Simon Kick (1603-1652) married Christina Duyster in 1631. On 10 June 1662, Cornelis Kick and Cornelia Spaeroogh, living in the Koninghstraet, drew up their testament (Not. J. de Winter, cited in Bredius Künstler-inventare, p. 790). On 27 August 1665, the honorable Johan van den Broeck, as father and guardian of his son Elias van den Broeck, signed a contract with Cornelis Kick whereby his son Elias van den Broeck was apprenticed for four years to learn the art of painting with Kick. The father promised to pay Kick 140 f. in learning money per year and an extra 100 f. at the end of four years (these were unusually high amounts) (Bredius, op.cit., p. 791). Johannes van den Broeck, baptized on 20 December 1593, was Commissaris van 't Klein Zegel in The Hague in 1624 and thereafter Commis ter Financie, and Knight of St. Michel. He married Machelina Rotgans, daughter of Jacob Lucasz. Rotgans of INVNO 463, on 17 December 1624 (Elias, Vroedschap van Amstedam, p. 171). On 27 September 1671, Cornelis Kick (not Eyck as in the GAA's DTB files) and Cornelia Spaeroogh had their twin sons Johannes and Balthasar baptized in the Amstelkerck in the presence of Jacob van Ruysdael (the painter) and Annitie Bressaert. Christina Cornelis Duyster, widow of Symon Kick, in her testament dated 30 May 1673, left her daughters Annetge, Hendrickge and Grietge most of her movable goods, a total of 1500 f. in cash, seeing that her son Cornelis had already received 500 f. at the time of his marrage. She also left her son Cornelis a portrait of her late sister Barber Cornelis Duyster painted her son or in place of that, at his choice, a picture of a kraembewaerstetie (a laying-in woman), made by the testatrix's late husband (Simon Kick) (Bredius, op.cit. p. 794). A painting of this subject, which was only evaluated at 4 gulden, was recorded in the present inventory (LOT 0004). On 21 December 1674, Cornelis Kick, widower of Cornelia Spaeroogh, living in the Utrechtsestraet in Amsterdam, was married to Machteltje Dircks de Rechte from Leiden (Bredius, op.cit. p. 792). On 21 May 1675, Cornelia Kick and Machteltje Dircks transferred to Johannes Spaerooogh, Kick's brother-in-law (Cornelia's brother), all their movable goods, clothing etc. as collateral for a debt of 4,000 f. for which Johannes and his father (Harmen Spaeroogh) had constituted themselves sureties (ibid.) Machteltje in de Rechten was buried on 1 December 1679. On 18 June 1681, after the death of Cornelis Kick, his brothers-in-law declared that they they would be responsible for his burying costs but not for his debts (ibid.) On 25 February 1695, Willem Cornelisz. Kick, son of the late Cornelis Kick, declared that 156 f. was left from his share in the inheritance from his grandfather Herman Spaeroogh as well as from his brothers Simon (II) and Harman Kick (Bredius, op. cit. p.793). | |
