CommentaryFrancois Gijsels was born in 1575 and obtained Amsterdam citizenship on 21 January 1588. This was probably the year he arrived in Amsterdam. On 25 March 1600, Fransoys Gijsens, from Antwerp, warehouse man, 25, having lived 13 years on the St. Anthonisdijck in the Nieustadt, assisted by his mother Lijntgen Tijkmakers, was betrothed to Esther Braems, from Antwerp, 27, having lived 14 years in the Nieuhoochstraet assisted by her neve Jan van de Mertt (in the Pui) (Bedius, Künstler-inventare, p.1915). In 1626, Francois Gijsels I joined a company of warehouse men, including Hendrick van Reet (of INVNO 477) and Hans Wynants (of INVNO 636). They received an octroi (monopoly) on the warehousing of V.O.C. goods (Bredius, op.cit. p.1916). On 13 November 1649, Francoys Gijsels, from Antwerp, warehouse man, widower of Hester Braems, living behind the Deventer lumber market, was betrothed to Margrieta Rovers, from Osenbrughe, 42, living as supra, showing a letter from her mother (ibid.) In his testament of 3 November 1659, he stipulated that his children would inherit 36 paintings. The rest would be divided into four parts, of which one would accrue to the widow. The widow would be allowed to stay six months in the house. In 1666, the heirs of Francois Gijsels I, including his widow, sold the house and court in the N.Z. Oosterbrugwal for f. 5,400 (Bredius, op.cit. p. 1917) He was the father of Francois Gijsels(II), painter and warehouse man who married Margareta Lemmens of INVNO 478.
