CommentaryOn 3 March 1635, Antonie de Brul (signs Antonio de Brull), from Amsterdam, bookkeeper, 23 years old, assisted by his uncle Pieter de Brull, living on the Princegracht, was betrothed to Margriete Sonnemans, from Delft, 22, no living parents, assisted by Pieternelle Sonnemans, her sister (DTB 443/282). On Pieter de Brul, who was a buyer at W.K. auction, see R 21223 of Montias2. On 21 May 1635, Salomon Coningh (the painter), 25, and Anthony de Brul, 23, declared at the request of Andries Boelisz. that a year ago they had been present in the house of the producent (Andries Boelisz.) when Geraert van Ravensweij had obtained from Boelisz., at his earnest request, a rare and beautiful knife, half inlaid with silver, for which Ravensweij had promised to pay Boelisz. two silver medals worth 9 gulden each (NA 1184, fol. 102, Not. J. de Vos). Both Ravensweij and Boelisz., who were probably related, belonged to old Amsterdam families, known before the Alteration. On 21 September 1636, Antoni de Brul and Margrieta Sonnemans had their daughter Catrijna baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Eduwart Sonnemans (DTB 41/358). Eduard Sonnemans, who may have been Margrieta's brother, was a merchant who, on 7 September 1632, caused a Haarlem notary to interrogate Jacques de Clercq (probably of R 30311 of Montias2) concerning a shipment of silk goods which had been confiscated in St. Sebastien (cited in Genealogie De Clercq by Daan de Clercq, as communicated by Anne Goldgar). In June 1637 (the exact date is not readable), Pieter de Cock, 28, and Anthony de Brull, 25, merchants, declared at the request of Jacques and Guillam van Hoorn that they had inspected certain merchandise (NA 951, film 1174) On 20 December 1637, Anthoni de Brul and Margrieta Sonnemans had their daughter Margrieta baptized in the N.K. in the presence of Jan van Geers (?) (DTB 42/59). On 18 June 1646, Anthony Claesz., painter (of R 34334), 39 years old, declared that he had been present when Anthony de Brul had bought and paid for two sculpted pieces (gesneden Conststucken) for 800 f. (Bredius, Künstler-inventare, p. 1784). These two expensive sculptures are likely to be the two animal pieces by Collines (Quellinus) in the present inventory (R 15393 and 2370 of Montias2). Antony de Brul was buried, coming from the Princegracht, on 12 February 1653. 8 f. were paid to the church on his behalf (DTB 1100B/117).
