CommentaryOn 4 August 1616, Abraham van Offenberch, from Middelburgh, no living parents, 29 years old, living in the Warmoesstraet, was betrothed to Susanna van Steenwinckel, 22, assisted by her mother Mayken Melis, living in the Breesstraet (DTB 420/258). On 24 February 1619, Abraham van Offenburch and Susanna van Steenwinkel had their daughter Maijke baptized in the O.K. in the presence of Joost Rudts and Maijken van Steenwinkel (DTB 5/275). Susanna was the sister of Andries van Steenwinkel of R 27482 of Montias2. Maijken van Steenwinkel is identical with Maijken Melis, the mother of Susanna. Joost Rudts (or Ruts) was the brother of Magdalena Ruts, the first wife of Hans van Coninxloo II of R 29348 of Montias2. On 17 February 1628, Abraham van Offenberch, widower of Susanna van Steenwinckel, living on N.Z. Voorburgwal, was betrothed to Sara Verspreet, 36, no living parents, assisted by her brother Jaques Verspreet and her sister Tanneken Verspreet (DTB 432/567). On Sara and Jaques Verspreet, see the NOTES to R 25596 of Montias2. Abraham van Offenburch, living on the Lelysgracht, paid a tax of 30 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 303vo, p. 69). The heirs of Maijken Steenwinckel, living at the same address, paid 15 f. (Kohier, fol. 304, p. 69). (It is curious that, when they paid the tax on their wealth in 1631, Abraham van Offenburch, Maijke van Steenwinkel, and Anthony Verspreet, who were all related, lived next to each other on the Lelysgracht although at least the first of these had lived elsewhere in 1628). On 5 April 1636, Abraham van Offenberch, merchant, was cited in a document (NA 521, film 6505). On 11 January 1640, Reymerich Martens appeared before the Orphan Chamber on behalf of her son with Lucas Jansz. Thier (?), schoolmaster. Johannes Verspreet and Abraham van Offenberch were said to be the closest kins (WK 5073/789). Johannes Verspreet, cited in the previous act, is probably identical with the individual of that name of INVNO 497, who was a sugar refiner. If so, this is the only document linking him (via Sara Verspreet, the wife of Abraham van Offenberch) to Hans Verspreet and his extensive family. Abram van Offenberch was buried on 15 October 1652 (DTB 1055A/11). Abraham van Offenberch undoubtedly belonged to the family of merchants, initially from Antwerp, who traded on an international scale. Carel van Mander cited the collection of Seigneur Offenberch (probably Guilliam van Offenberch, merchant in Amsterdam, who bought 9 lots for 2 f. 8 st. in the Haarlem lottery of 1606 (GAA, 54/78 F 432)). Ursula van Offenberch married the merchant Herman Pelgroms, the brother of Francois Pelgroms of R 29906 of Montias2 (Bok, Dawn of the Golden Age, Exh. Cat., p. 158.) Anna van Offenberch married Steffens (Stephen) Pelgroms, who was undoubtedly related to the last-named brothers. Johanna van Loon, the sister of Hans Willemsz. van Loon of R 7696 of Montias2, married Dirck van Offenberch. (A bill of exchange submitted to Hans Felbier and Hans Willemsz. (van Loon) on 26 May 1599 was protested by Felbier and Willemsz. (Winkelman, Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van het Oostzeehandel, R.G.P., 178(1981), pp. 456-7) Hans's brother Lieven married Johanna van Offenberch. Another individual, named Abraham Joosten Offenbeeck (possibly spelled Offenberg), married to Maritge Thijsen, cyther-maker, passed his testament on 24 August 1637 (NA 919, film 1150, fol. 288). He is also cited as the maker of a lute in 11 parts, which was a prize in a lottery held about 1625 ( Oud Holland 4(1886), p. 195).
