Commentary | Otto Badius (1594-1664), from Aachen, was predikant in Amsterdam from 1620 to 1659. He was the first Reformed/Calvinist preacher to preach regularly in German to a flock of German-speaking auditors from Gulik, Cleves, Aachen, and Cologne. In 1630, he married Gertruyd (Giertje) Jans, the daughter of Jan Willemsz. Bogaert (of R 20411). She appeared as Bogers dochter in the satyrical poem by Vondel Een otter in't bolwerk. Otter was of course a pun on Badius's first name (Evenhuis, Ook dat was Amsterdam 1(1965), pp. 274-5). After the death of his first wife, he was again betrothed, on 18 February 1637 (DTB 446/40). He thereby became the neef (actually son-in-law ?) of Pieter Beck, the cousin of the diary writer David Beck. Otto Badius is mentioned three times in David Beck's Spiegel van mijn leven, 1624 (Verloren, 1993). In 1630, predikant Otto Badius officiated at the marriage of Frans Banning Cocq (of Rembrandt Nightwatch fame) with one of the daughters of burgomaster Volckert Overlander. Badius was a strict Calvinist, opposed to dance schools and banquets. He was an opponent of the Peace of Munster of 1648 (Evenhuis, op.cit. p. 275). The predikant Otto Badius paid a tax of 5 f. in 1631 (Kohier, fol. 7vo., p. 3). | |
