CommentaryLouis Houwen signed the Remonstrant petition of 1628. In 1631, Lowijs Hauwen, living on the West side of the Keisersgracht, paid a tax of 30 f. (Kohier, fol. 94vo, p. 22). On 21 November 1631, the honorable Sara van Tongerlo, earlier widow of Jan Munter de oude and now married to Sr. Antonis Moens, together with Jan Munter de jonge, heir of Jan Munter de oude, Pieter Cleuteryn (Remonstrant, cited in the NOTES to R 27441 of Montias2) and Luijs Houwens, all living in Amsterdam, gave a procuration to Jan Andries Moerbeeck (Meerbeeck) in Hamburg and Arent van Solderen to liquidate a company with Enoch Kipper (NA 842, Not. Hoogeboom). On Jan Andries Meerbeeck, see also the TEXT to R 402 and the NOTES to R 20033 and R 36738. On 28 February 1632, Anthony Moens, merchant, as husband and guardian of Sara van Tengerloo, represented her son Jan Munter in a dispute with Enoch Rippens in Riga. The merchants Louis Houwe and Pieter Cleutryn were also represented (NA 843, fol. 41, Not. Hoogeboom). On 11 April 1636, Louis Houwe and a number of other merchants declared that Adriaen van Ackerlack, merchant, was in good standing and fully credit worthy. They were willing to extend him further credit (NA 695A, film 4981, Not. J. Warnaerts). In 1637, Louis Hauwen, in company with Jacques Loones and Nicolaes Loon, contracted with a Russian monastery for the delivery of fish (E. Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden, 1560-1640, p. 340). Clara Houwen, cited in the INTRO, was betrothed to Mathijs Snoeck on 30 March 1638 (DTB 448/222). Catharina Houwen, likewise cited, was betrothed to Daniel Planck on 30 March 1650 (DTB 467/526). On 30 March 1640, two workers at the Amsterdam Wagh declared at the request of Cornelis Bicker (of R 8161) that a number of individuals had received bales of pepper, including Louis Houwen (6 bales) (NA 992, film 1222, fol. 46). On 30 September 1658, Louis Houwen, upon his departure for France, left some goods, including three paintings, in the house of his swager Philips Metsu (perhaps of R 27367) (NA 1841, film 2096, fol. 337, Not. N. Kruijs). It is not clear by what marriage connection Houwen had become Philips Metsu's brother-in-law. Long after his death a suit was waged among his heirs concerning his grave. On 13 February 1659, the aldermen resolved that Mathijs Snoeck, cited in the INTRO above as the husband of Louis's daughter Anna, could be buried in a grave in the N.Z. Kapel, which was contested by some of the heirs (I. van Eeghen in Jaarboek Amstelodamum 59(1967), p. 67). Among the books in the inventory: Synodes nationalis. Martelaers boeck, Handelingen van Sinodis, Theodor de Besa. Note also that both Clara Houwen and Catharina Houwen married in the Reformed Church (30/03/1638 and 30/03/1650 respectively).
