Commentary | On 8 January 1637, Rogier Rogiersz. Ramsden, from Amsterdam, 26, assisted by his mother Catherijna Courten, living on the Herengracht, was betrothed to Magdalena den Otter, from Amsterdam, 25, living on the Coningsgracht, assisted by her uncle Hillebrant den Otter (DTB 674/177). This Hillebrant den Otter is probably not the better known (and wealthier) Hillebrand Florisz. den Otter but Hillebrand Pietersz. den Otter, the presumed brother of Claes den Otter of INVNO 610. Later Rogier Ramsden lived on the Keisersgracht in a house which had been built for him by Hendrick de Keyser. The house was acquired by David van Baerle (of INVNO 118) in 1639 (E. van Houten, Grachten, p. 52). He may have been the brother of Jan Rogiersz. Ramsden who, on 21 October 1617, was insinuated by Hans van Solt (I) concerning payment for some cloth (organcina) that van Solt had sold Ramsden (NA 381, film 6413, Not. Jacob and Nicolaes Jacobsz.) On 22 December 1638, Jerononimo Henriquez, Portuguese merchant, had a notary insinuate Jacob Blocklandt and Rogier Ramsden, Netherlandish merchants, to this effect. Henriquez claimed that he had sold some dates to Blocklandt and Ramsden for 56 f. per 100 pounds on the basis of a sample (munster) of three little vats. You (the insinuees) now refuse to accept the dates on the pretext that they are not of the requisite quality. Henriquez summons you to accept delivery within 24 hours. The wife of Rogier Ramsden (unnamed) answered that she would tell her husband. (NA 1498, film 1572, Not. J. Oly). When Joan Rogiersz. Ramsden was buried on 18 November 1669, the church bells were rung for 3 1/2 hours, denoting that he was R.C. (DTB 1056/18). Hillebrand Florisz. den Otter (of R 21578 of Montias2) and his family were also R.C. Rogier Ramsden was portrayed as a schutter in the company of captain Joan Huydecoper by Govaert Flinck in 1648 (Kopstukken 1600-1800, p. 205). Magdalena Rogiers Ramsden, the daugter of Rogier Ramsden was buried on 17 March 1673 (DTB 1056/78). Magdalena den Otter, wife of Rogier Ramsden, is probably not identical with Magdalena den Otter van Ravensburgh, the daughter of Hillebrand Florisz. den Otter (Dudok van Heel, Genealogical notes). She seems, as mentioned above, to have been the niece of Hillebrand Pietersz. den Otter. Another son of Rogier Ramsden, named Koenradt Rogier Ramsden, married Katrijna Molen. He was buried in the O.K. on 28 April 1643 (DTB 1046/19vo). | |
