CommentaryPaolo de Willem (Wilhem) de jonge was baptized in Amsterdam on 2 June 1615 and was buried there on 4 January 1654 (DTB 1055A/29). He was the eldest son of Paolo de Willem (Wilhem) de oude, an outstanding merchant born in Hamburg (1581-1648), and of Sara de Haze (1592-1635), whom he married on 2 September 1614 (Jaarboek C.B.G. 25(1971), p. 148). Sara de Haze, baptized on 19 January 1592, was the sister of the Antwerp-born merchant Hendrick de Haze II of R 28875. She was buried in Amsterdam on 15 February 1635. The elder De Wilhem was named factoor (resident representative) by Christian IV of Denmark in 1621. He was associated in business with Abraham de Ligne of R 21482. He was buried in Amsterdam on 16 October 1648. Paolo de Wilhem II, like his father, was a merchant trading in Italy and the Near East. In 1643, Paul de Willem de jonge (II) signed a petition, together with many other merchants, calling for the stabilization of the States' currency (Van Dillen, Wisselbanken, R.P.G. 59(1925), p. 85), He apparently never married (Jaarboek C.B.G., op, cit. p. 149). As the INTRO indicates, the younger De Willem was the brother of Jeronimus (Geronimo in the INTRO, baptized on 15 January 1617); of Sara (1627-1661), who married Vincent van Genegen (son of Daniel van Genegen of R 20520); of Hendrick (on whom, see below); of David (1628-1707), of R 4279, who married Hillegonda van Beuningen, the daughter of Dirck Geurtsz. van Beuningen, of R 21904; and of Clara de Willem, baptized on 30 September 1619, who married Mattheus Luls, the son of Daniel Luls and Magdalena Helmbach, on 11 May 1638 (ibid.) The brother of Paolo de Willem I, named David de Leu de Wilhem, was the adviser of Prince Hendrick of Orange and a frequent correspondent of Constantijn Huygens. The following information about the father and brother of Paolo de Willem II helps to establish the milieu in which he lived. On 23 February 1634, Lodewyck van den Bergh, 32 and Daniel van Beringen, 28, both droggists, testified at the request of Paolo de Willem (I), merchant, about a shipment of rhubarb (NA 694B, Not. J. Warnaerts). On 2 July 1636, Daniel van Steenwinckel, consul in Livorno, 45 years old, made a deposition at the request of Paolo de Willem (I) and of Davidt de Willem, counsel to His Excellency the Prince of Orange, concerning an obligation signed by Jan Antonio Romiti (the son of Gonsalvo (or Consalvo) Romiti, merchant and art dealer) (NA 695A, film 4981, Not. J. Warnaerts). In 1639, the poet Caspar Barlaeus invited to his home, among his amicos selectiores, Paolo de Willem I, together with the satrap of Muiden (P.C. Hooft), Dr. Verhoeven (of R 24408) and secretary Mostart (of R 21940). The brother of Paolo de Willem de jonge, named Hendrick, or Henrico, baptized on 27 September 1620, was also a merchant and freighter of ships. He married Margariet van Lier, daughter of Jan van Lier and of Margarita Nicquet, on 18 November 1659 (Jaarboek C.B.G. loc. cit.) After his death she remarried with Daniel van Delft (cited in the TEXT to R 410 of Montias1). For her probate inventory, see INVNO 217 of 10 April 1664.
