CommentaryBalthasar van Haeft was almost certainly born in Antwerp, as the Antwerp-based testament of his aunt Clara van Haeften suggests (see below). Balthasar van Haeften, merchant in Amsterdam, was married to Elisabeth van Wellens, who was probably related to the merchant Jaques van Wellens, born in Antwerp, active in trade with the Baltic since 1573 and first noted in Amsterdam in 1597 (Wijnroks, Handel tussen Rusland en de Nederlanden 1560-1640, p. 167, and Gelderblom Zuid-Nederlandse kooplieden, p. 318). The couple had a daughter Catharina Theresa cited in the NOTES to R 19298 of Montias2. For a deposition in which Balthasar (van) Haeften appears as a freighter of linseed, see R 32466 of Montias2. On 23 June 1671, Clara van Haeften, daughter of the late Adriaen van Haeften and of Catharina Melis, drew up her testament. Among other bequests, she left her nephew Balthasar van Haeften a painting of the Lamentation (Noot Godts) which stood before her mantlepiece. Clara was an R.C. begin. It is very probable that her nephew was also Catholic (Duverger, Antwerpse kunstinventarissen 9(1997), pp.447-8). Note that 18 gulden were paid to Wlenburch (Uylenburg) and Ban for their appraisals. Garbrand Bann, from Haarlem, painter, 27 years old, was betrothed on 26 July 1640 to Willemyntje Boelen, from Amsterdam, 17, assisted by Catharina Boelen (in de Pui) (Obreen, Archief voor de Nederlandsche kunstgeschiedenis 5(1882-1883), p. 11). He was a painter of still lifes (a fruit piece turned up in a Christie's sale of 1992) (Van der Willigen and Meijer, Dictionary of Dutch and Flemish Painters, 2003, p. 31).
